About the Book
Multiculturalism has
been described as the recognition of the people’s ethnicity, religion,
linguistic background and sexual orientation. The present book attempts to
study multiculturalism in the Indian sub-continent with reference to Khushwant
Singh’s four novels namely Train to Pakistan (1956), I
Shall Not Hear the Nightingale (1959), Delhi (1989)
and The Company of Women (1999).
There are graphic
descriptions of physical love in his novels. His use of language and style is
very realistic, down-to-earth and transposed from Punjabi to English. The
narrative design of his novels, except in The Company of Women, has a
historical and contemporary context which is rooted in character and situation.
In this age of
multiculturalism, people have great concern for their political, cultural and
linguistic identities. In places like India where diversity prevails, the idea
of separate geo-political national entities has become inevitable, the
minorities being concerned for their future under the larger ethnic group.
Khushwant Singh has strong conviction in his Sikh community. He glorifies the
rich culture and tradition of his community thereby bringing it to the
limelight.
