About the Book: 

The book is an effort to understand the transnational encounter between two different societies, which was made possible by the experiences of British colonialism in India, particularly the North Eastern Part of India. It is a comprehensive history of the North East in relationship to the twin contexts of colonialism and indigenous interactions. It tries to understand the origin and reason for the flourishing of Christianity in these regions within the context of a dominant Hindu society of the Indian Nation-State. 

The question of India is then fraught with how differential histories play a part in our understanding of religion, territory, borders, language and dialect. In trying to understand Christianity as introduced by the Colonial Missionaries, the book compares it to the case of South India, where mission history is represented by the Church Missionary Society. The focus is on the four North Eastern states of India where the degree of proselytisation was most effective namely, the states of Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur and concentrates on the experiences of the American Baptist and the Welsh Presbyterians.
