Russian Social Policy from Boris Yeltsin to Vladimir Putin: An Interpretation

Title: Russian Social Policy from Boris Yeltsin to Vladimir Putin: An Interpretation
Author: Sanjukta Maharana
ISBN: 978-93-82395-82-9
Publisher: Ruby Press & Co.
First Edition: 2015
Language: English
Binding: Hard Cover

About the Author:
Sanjukta Maharana is currently working as a Research Assistant, Centre for research in rural and industrial development, (Ministry of External Affair), Chandigarh.

Sanjukta has done MA in Political Science (Gold Medalist) from Sambalpur University, Burla, Odisha, M. Phil in International Politics from Centre for Russian and Central Asian Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and Ph.D. Thesis Submitted in International Politics, Centre for Russian and central Asian studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The Author has also published Articles in various national and international magazines and attended various national and international seminar and conferences.

About the Book:
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) emerged as a super power after the Second World War. At that time all social responsibilities were taken care of by the socialist state. In 1991 the Soviet disintegration saw the transition from state controlled planned economy to market based economy and various economic reforms like Gaider reforms had severe impact on social policy of Russia which led to decline in standard of living, poor health facilities, poor educational facilities, costly higher educational facilities, unemployment and poverty, leading to overall decline in the status of Russian society from 1991 to 1999. Withdrawal of the state from social sector resulted in the deterioration in social living standard of people during Yeltsin’s period.

This work is most interesting now because drastic changes have taken place in Russia since the Soviet disintegration. But at what level society is changing from time to time is most important, because the society is the nucleus around which all other activities like political as well as economic take place. By focusing status of social condition during Yeltsin’s Presidency and Putin’s Presidency, one can know whether it is getting better or worse.

President Putin claimed that the growth in gross national production of Russia during his Presidency reflected the improving social and economic condition of Russians. But in this research work it would attempt to collect data on per capita income of people which reflects the financial condition of the people. The human development indicators used in this analysis reflects the standard of living. This will also study whether the reforms which were carried out were helpful for improving the social status of Russian.

This book covers the social policy of new Russia (from 1991 to 2008). This book is confined to the territory of new Russia only, and does not cover other former Soviet republics. This book indicates that the social welfare system between 1991 and 1999 was extremely poor but during Putin’s period it improved to some extent. Various reforms were carried out to eradicate the old difficulties.

Unemployment specially among the educated youths has created serious social problems, which is evident from the crimes, and the criminals in the society. The existing problem of unemployment in the country in general and the state of Manipur in particular, fascinated the author to go in depth into the problem of unemployment and to suggest feasible solution, keeping in view the socio-economic and political situation of Manipur. History, Philosophy and Fields of Social Work

Title: History, Philosophy and Fields of Social Work
Author: Dr. Priyanka Singh
ISBN: 978-93-82395-80-5
Publisher: Ruby Press & Co.
First Edition: 2015
Language: English
Binding: Hard Cover
Price: Rs. 699/-

About the Author:
Dr. Priyanka Singh is presently working as an Assistant Professor & In-Charge, School of Social Work, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Education, Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agricultural Technology and Sciences from April 13, 2012, in the university since November 2006. She has worked as capacity of Program Organizer of “International Workshop on Indo-US Culture and Traditions” organized by the International Secretariat of Allahabad Agricultural Institute-Deemed University, Allahabad from 17th July to 16th August, 2007.

About the Book:
Social work has its roots in the social and economic upheaval wrought by the Industrial Revolution, in particular the struggle of society to deal with poverty and its resultant problems. Because dealing with poverty was the main focus of early social work, it is intricately linked with the idea of charity work, but it must now be understood in much broader terms. For instance it is not uncommon for modern social workers to find themselves dealing with the consequences arising from many other 'social problems' such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and discrimination based on age or on physical or mental ability.

Modern social workers can be found helping to deal with the consequences of these and many other social maladies in all areas of the human services and in many other fields besides. Whereas social work started on a more scientific footing aimed at controlling and reforming individuals (at one stage supporting the notion that poverty was a disease), it has in more recent times adopted a more critical and holistic approach to understanding and intervening in social problems.

Brand Management of Multinational Companies: Selected FMCG Products in India & Thailand

Title: Brand Management of Multinational Companies: Selected FMCG Products  in India & Thailand
Author: Sunildro L.S. Akoijam
ISBN:  978-93-82395-74-4
Language: English
Binding: Hard Cover
First Edition: 2015
Category: Management

About the Book:
Brand Management has become more important due to the rapid changes in the global market and the increased competition experienced between firms. Good brand management brings about clear differentiation between products, ensures consumer loyalty and preferences and may lead to a greater market share. Brands are highly regarded as an important source of capital for most businesses. The term brand has different meaning attached to it; a brand can be defined as a name, logo, symbol and identity or a trademark. A powerful brand will enhance a customer’s attitude strength of the product association of a brand. Attitude strength is developed by experience with the product.
Brand name and what a brand stands for are the core values for most fast Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCGs). If properly managed, it will increase the competitive advantage of the fast moving consumer goods. The basic attribute of a fast moving consumer goods are also important for a FMCG brand to excel  because the strength of a brand commonly provide the fundamental steps for differentiating between several competitors. Majority of the FMCG brands have distinguishable brand identifiers, for example Lux soap is easily recognized by customers. The best way to build brand value and stop product and service commoditization is through continuous attempt to build brand equity. Strong brands are established by creating an emotional attachment with customers, seeking differentiation in communication and performing the service. Branding makes clear a FMCG company’s reason for existence and inspires its employees to get used to the brand thereby building it for customers. Brands are used as shorthand to make trips to the grocery store easier; they are used to re-assure us about purchasing decisions and are even used to define ourselves in the society. A brand is a promise. With a brand, customer expectations are set. When someone buys a product or service, they count on those expectations to be fulfilled. In this way, an effective brand management is coming important for every company.

About the Author:
Sachin Kr. Tiwary, PhD. is currently working as an Assistant Archaeologist, Archaeological Survey of India, Government of India, Ministry of Culture, Sarnath Circle, Sarnath, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He has done MA from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, PhD from A.I.H. and Archaeology Department, Patna University.

About the Book:
The book “Ethno Rock Art: A Case Study of Kaimur, Bihar” is a work, which largely depends on field exploration in the study area. Ethno rock art is one of the neglected disciplines of Indian Archaeology. In this work apart from the brief about the rock art of Kaimur, a detail attempt has been made to interpret them taking clue from ethno-archaeological evidences.

The collection of information started from a wide review of books and articles published on the Kaimurian rock art; researches about the occupants of those territory through the ages and the survey of specific data about their ethno art. As far as the research on rock art of Kaimur region (Bihar) is concerned, unfortunately only two articles are written on this regional rock art.

The work almost redefines the concept of origin and purpose of rock art and offers an extensive and all-inclusive classification of the rock art without hesitating to coin new terms for certain classes that were hitherto accommodated under groups which they were not conveniently belonging to on the basis of features and typology. Further, the contemporary lifestyles of the native habitants have been deeply observed for the first time revealing connectivity with the tradition may be with some modification of the prehistoric man and leading us to the belief that the social moorings of the present society extend to that by gone era.

The result of present book will elevate the Kaimur rock art on the national or even international level and that now the rock art researches from far off regions or nations may now turn to this region as one of the resource centres of filed observation.

The Salt: Luminescently Cooked

Title: The Salt: Luminescently Cooked
Author: Dr. A. Nabachandra Singh
ISBN: 978-93-82395-72-0
Language: English
Category: Chemistry
First Edition: January, 2015
Binding: Hard Cover

About the Book:
Thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL), generally known as thermoluminescence (TL) may be considered to be the flagship method of all Thermally Stimulated Processes (TSPs). An enormous amount of energy and intellectual effort has been expended for the last seven decades since the pioneering works of Randall and Wilkins, Garlic and Gibson and others to extract model parameters from TL glow peaks. Despite major success in the understanding of the process of TL, this goal still remains one of the most difficult jobs to attain. The basic difficulty lies in the inherent “degeneracy” of the analytical results in that more than one set of parameters and often, more than one model, can yield theoretical curves which fit the experimental ones with acceptable accuracy.

Extracting model parameters is not the only worthwhile goal of TL studies. As for example, successful applications of this phenomenon have been made in:
i) Dosimetry of natural and artificial radiation fields i.e. in medical physics, radiation protection, archeo- and geochronology etc.
ii) Dating of natural and artificial samples which had been buried under for a long time.

The heart of the dosimetry is the integration of a relevant glow peak or a part of the glow curve. Since glow curves are in general complex, consisting of a number of glow peaks (including unstable ones) in addition to the one useful for dosimetry. Thermoluminescence dosimetry (TLD) workers often used suitable pre-heat treatment or fading for few days to remove the unwanted, unstable signal. In addition, background also causes hindrance for weak signal. In order to overcome these, the community of TLD workers have resorted to Computerized Glow Curve Deconvolution (CGCD), which is essentially fitting the glow peaks to the numerically generated one.

Around the world, four methods have been broadly categorized for extracting/refining salt (Scientific name as Sodium Chloride with symbol NaCl). They may be summarized as follows:-
Ø   refining of common salt through natural way.
Ø   from mineral rock-salt of the crust
Ø   by heating saline water.
Ø   by chemical method
Natural salts available in Manipur (India) in different forms from different sources i.e. from rock-salt of the crust as well as from saline springs have been characterized and studied the TL properties to find the dosimetry properties.

Radiation therapy is an important technique for the treatment of cancer. The intention of this work is to provide all the fundamental tools necessary to characterize and embark upon the application f TL in dosimetry using natural salt that could be compared to dosimetric materials like common iodised salt (NaCl : I), which is non-toxic and easily available.

History of Modern Philosophy: From Nicolas of Cusa to the Present Time

Title: History of Modern Philosophy: From Nicolas of Cusa to the Present Time
Author: Richard Falckenberg
ISBN: 978-93-82395-05-8
Language: English
Binding: Hard Cover
Edition: 2015

About the Author:
Richard Falkenberg was a German philosopher. He dealt with the history of philosophy. He wrote a history of modern philosophy, which was often reprinted and was kept up to date by him. Through this writing, and by his professorship in Erlangen, he coined as others thought of the history of philosophy. He attacked the truth of philosophy is not dogmatic, but historically and striving for harmony and justice. He belonged to a critical idealism to. He also wrote six articles for the General German biography.

About the Book:
Systems of philosophy are not as dependent on our progressive knowledge of facts as the theories of natural science, and change less quickly; notwithstanding their mutual conflicts, and in spite of the talk about discarded standpoints, they possess in a measure the permanence of classical works of art, they retain for all time a certain relative validity. The thought of Plato, of Aristotle, and of the heroes of modern philosophy is ever proving anew its fructifying power. Nowhere do we find such instructive errors as in the sphere of philosophy; nowhere is the new so essentially a completion and development of the old, even though it deem itself the whole and assume a hostile attitude toward its predecessors; nowhere is the inquiry so much more important than the final result; nowhere the categories "true and false" so inadequate. The spirit of the time and the spirit of the people, the individuality of the thinker, disposition, will, fancy-all these exert a far stronger influence on the development of philosophy, both by way of promotion and by way of hindrance, than in any other department of thought.

Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters

Title: Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters
Author: Logan Marshall
ISBN: 978-93-82395-67-6
Language: English
Edition: 2015
Binding: Hard Cover
Category: History

About the Author:
Logan Marshall (born 1884), was the pen name of Logan Howard-Smith of Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Howard-Smith attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1905. Upon graduation he took a position as assistant editor at The John C. Winston Co., a publishing firm. Winston was later acquired by Henry Holt and became part of Holt, Rinehart & Winston. At Winston, Howard-Smith both edited and wrote a large number of books, mainly under the pen name Logan Marshall.

About the Book:
The book is a detailed and accurate account of the most terrible marine disaster in history, constructed from the real facts as obtained from those on board who survived. Well established as part of the canon of Titanic literature, this book is a must-have for anyone with an interest in the ship and her sorrowful fate. When Titanic set sail from Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York on April 10, 1912, it was the largest ocean liner in the world. Believed "practically unsinkable" because of her double-bottomed hull and watertight compartments, she carried more than 2,000 passengers and crew, although only sufficient lifeboats for just over half that number. Four days out of Southampton, on the night of April 14, she struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank within a matter of hours; 1,503 lives were lost. The author interviewed the survivors in the immediate aftermath of the disaster and in this book he records the facts as they were known.

Abraham Lincoln and the Union: A Chronicle of the Embattled North

Author: Nathaniel W. Stephenson
ISBN: 978-93-82395-66-9
Edition: 2015
Language: English
Binding: Hard Cover
Category: History

About the Author:
Nathaniel W. Stephenson is the Professor of history at the College of Charleston 1902-23 and at Scripps College 1927-35.

About the Book:
In spite of a lapse of sixty years, the historian who attempts to portray the era of Lincoln is still faced with almost impossible demands and still confronted with arbitrary points of view. It is out of the question, in a book so brief as this must necessarily be, to meet all these demands or to alter these points of view. Interests that are purely local, events that did not with certainty contribute to the final outcome, gossip, as well as the mere caprice of the scholar these must obviously be set aside.

The task imposed upon the volume resolves itself, at bottom, into just two questions: Why was there a war? Why was the Lincoln Government successful? Prominent as it is here made, the Lincoln matter all bears in the last analysis on one point his control of his support. On that the history of the North hinges. The personal and private Lincoln it is impossible to present within these pages. The public Lincoln, including the character of his mind, is here the essential matter. The bibliography at the close of the volume indicates the more important books which are at the reader's disposal and which it is unfortunate not to know.

About the Book:
The term corporate social responsibility (CSR) signifies that since business, on the whole, derive their existence and continuity from the society and its environment, they must have some obligations to discharge some social responsibilities for the benefit of the society and its constituents in general and the environment with in which it operates in particular. As a result, it is the obligation of Business to undertake actions that preserve, promote and cause to promote and improve the welfare of the society, in the one hand, and meet the requirements of the sustainability of environment from where business draw the sinews of their operation, on the other along with their own concern for generating surplus for their economic survival. Thus, a business under corporate social responsibility has got the responsibility both to organization and society. The study of the corporate social responsibility of business, here we made an attempt to get information for understanding how tacitly and intelligently keeping their economic and technical objective in mind is and has been responding to the betterment and well being of the society that “restrains individual and corporate behavior from ultimately destructive activities, no matter how immediately profitable, and leads in the direction of positive contribution to human betterment”.

The purpose of this book is to analyze the underlying logic of and empirical evidence from corporate houses for corporate social responsibility. To do this, it critically examined conceptual and empirical literature on CSR in general. Additionally, it performed an empirical study with data from corporate bodies in the field of oil and gas sector from Tripura and Assam, also view of general people were taken from these two states to test conceptually driven objectives and to gain insights into the empirical relation of corporate social responsibility performance.

Today’s heightened interest in the proper role of business in society has been promoted by increased sensitivity of the environmental and ethical issues. Issues like environmental damage, improper treatment of natural resources, political alignment by organizations, faulty production and marketing system leading to customer inconvenience or danger, are highlighted in the media. In some countries, Government regulation regarding extractive industry, environment, social issues and multinational companies has increased, and standards and laws are also often set at a supranational level. This leads to investors and investment fund managers have began to take account of corporation’s CSR policy in making investment decisions. Some consumers have become increasingly sensitive to the CSR performance of the companies from which they buy their goods and services. These trends have contributed to the pressure on companies to operate in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable way.

He has also published over 100 articles in various leading international newspapers and magazines in five continents - Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and North America.

About the Book:
The book provides an in-depth analysis of Myanmar’s (also known as Burma) political history since independence. The book will help academics and scholars who have teaching and research interests on Myanmar to understand how different political actors played differing roles in the country’s transition from one form of government to another. The book is also a helpful resource for general readers to understand the complexity of Myanmar’s problems. The concept and structure of the book does not center around one theoretical framework nor does it attempt to answer a specific question. It intends to help readers understand comprehensively about Myanmar’s problems and challenges in domestic politics as well as international relations.

Though the country is known to the international community as Myanmar or Burma, the book, except for direct quotations and the period prior to 1989, uses Myanmar, which is officially used by the Myanmar government as well as the United Nations. Myanmar was formerly known as Burma. It was renamed by the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) military government in 1989. Many in the Myanmar opposition groups, the expatriates, and some Western countries continue to use Burma. Some people argue that Burma should still be used since it was an undemocratic military government which changed the name without the consent of the people. There is no fundamental difference between the two names, since both still refer to one group of people, that is, Bama or Burman, the single largest ethnic group in the country. Some argue that the name change should only happen if a democratically elected government decides to do so with majority approval in the parliament. Some also say that the term Burma is easier to pronounce and remember than Myanmar.

His highly acclaimed works include Primitive Culture of India; Languages Customs and Religion of India and Sensus Ethnography of India.

About the Book:
The book is the Lectures delivered in 1922 at The School of Oriental Studies (Univ. of London). Complexity of Indian Culture Analysis of Fundamental Elements Dream Values and Social Life Prepotency of the Past Mind and Body Belief in Reincarnation Language as a Social Product Assimilation of Customs and the Relations of Higher with Lower Culture Value in situ of Customs The Selective and Comparative Method Common Elements and Range of Variable Elements. Before I attempt to define the lower culture or to describe its geographical distribution in India, let me clear the ground by emphasising the fact that primitive characters are not to be looked for in Indian culture as it now is for existing savage races are not merely peoples who have been left behind in the stream of progress. They are not simply examples of early stages in the development of human culture beyond which other peoples have progressed. It can be shown that each one of them has a highly complex history in which rites and customs introduced from elsewhere, perhaps from some highly-advanced society, have blended with others of a really primitive or infantile kind. Though existing cultures may not be primitive in the sense that they represent simple and uncontaminated stages of social development, we can safely accept the primitive character of their mentality and take them as guides to the history of mental development, though they are of very questionable value as guides to the order of social development. We must therefore dismiss from our minds such catch words as arrested development or continuity of progress. Let us remember the antiquity of India, the complexity of its social groupings, and the immense range of its culture.
